The State Transportation Department has cancelled any plans to ask the federal government for $800,000 for a Lewis and Clark Memorial near the State Capitol. The plan for the funding had been put on hold when the Federal Highway Commission raised questions about the propriety of using the money that way. The State Department’s action has come on the same day federal highway officials had decided the project was eligible for funding from the highway beautification fund after all. Backers of the monument say the federal money would have paid 80-percent of the costs.
