Missouri has two of the nation’s most environmentally toxic big cities. Organic Style Magazine has ranked 125 cities and puts St. Louis 125th. Kansas City is 106th. The only other Missouri city rates, Columbia is 9th. Organic Style is published in New York. 5,500 pieces of data are used in the rankings. Such things as car exhaust, ozone levels, fertilizer use, and mold counts are in the calculations. A magazine spokesman warns, however, that the numbers might be deceiving. He says a person could be perfectly healthy in St. Louis, but suffer terribly in the number one city – Santa Fe, New Mexico – if they’re allergic to high desert dust, for example.
