The Cardinals blew a 5-1 lead and Jason Isringhausen gave up three runs in the ninth to lose to the Brewers 7-6. St. Louis scored four runs in the third inning when Scott Rolen and Edgar Renteria drove two apiece with singles and Chris Widger drove in one with a single. St. Louis led 6-4 in the ninth before pinch-hitter Brooks Kieschnick tied it with a two-run homer. Jason Conti drove in his fifth run of the night with an RBI single to give Milwaukee a 7-6 edge. The loss kept the Cardinals five games out of first place in the National League Central race. The Cubs moved to within a half-game of first-place Houston.
