Corn that could help lower cholesterol and might inhibit the growth of breast cancer cells is under development in Creve Coeur. Researchers at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center have found a way to insert a gene from barley into common field corn. The result is corn with six times the usual amount of Vitamin E. Researchers say the benefit of the extra vitamin could be passed along throught he meat of animals that eat the corn, as well as in products made rom it. The Pioneer Corn Company has been paying for the research. Next up for researchers – tests on soybeans to see if they can be modified the same way.
