A legislative committee looking into proposals to raise more revenues from the state’s casino industry has had a chance to hear from a representative of the industry. Vern Jennings of Harrah’s, which operates casinos in both the St. Louis and Kansas City areas, is not at all impressed with the suggestion that casino taxes and fees be raised. He says with fees and taxes, the casino industry in Missouri is taxed at a rate of up to 35 percent, which puts it ahead of any other industry in the state in terms of how much is paid to the state and local jurisdictions. As for the idea to lift the $500 per session loss limit, casino operators are in favor of that, adding Missouri would benefit from additional revenues.
