Cards Lose Another Heart-Breaker

September 5, 2003 By admin Leave a Comment

The Cardinals blew another lead to the Cubs and dropped further in the National League Central standings. St Louis had leads of 2-0 and 5-3 and a 6-6 tie, but still fell 7-6. Brett Tomko had a rough outing, allowing six runs—five of them earned—but didn’t get the loss. That went to Mike DeJean who gave up the eventual game-winning RBI to Tony Womack in the seventh inning. Earlier in the frame, Chris Widger gave the Cardinals the lead with a two-run double. With the loss, St. Louis dropped to third place in the National League Central, a game and a half behind the Astros. The Cubs moved into second place, a half-game out. St. Louis dropped four of five to Chicago and blew leads in three of those four losses.
