The State Supreme Court has been asked to do it again – to reverse a judge’s sentence of death. Prison inmate Deandra Buchanan was sentenced to death by a judge after a jury deadlocked. In June, the court ruled 4-3 to reduce Joseph Whitfield’s death sentence to life without parole under similar circumstances. Buchanan was convicted of killing three people in Columbia. The Attorney General’s Office has argued the judge’s sentence was not arbitrary. He says the facts of the case support the death penalty. The United States Supreme Court has ruled that juries, not judges, should decide whether a person gets life or death.
