DNA Clears Man In St. Louis Rape Cases

August 26, 2003 By admin Leave a Comment

A man sent to prison 17 years ago for three rapes has been set free. DNA evidence shows he did not rape three girls. Larry Erby is the latest state prisoner to be freed because DNA testing of old evidence indicates he did not do the crime. The St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office and the Innocence Project, based in New York, agreed to the examinations. The DNA evidence in two of the cases show Erby is not guilty and since he was convicted during a single trial on all three charges, there’s doubt about the third conviction, too. Circuit attorney Jennifer Joyce says she and her staff are now reviewing 1,400 other cases in which DNA evidence might clear or confirm.
