There was no barrage of doubles for the Royals. After setting a team record for two-baggers on Monday, Kansas City was blanked 6-0 by the Yankees on Tuesday. Mike Mussina held them in check with eight innings of four-hit ball. Kansas City’s best chance to break Mussina came in the first inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. Raul Ibanez got things going with a single, while Mike Sweeney and Joe Randa followed up with walks. The rally ended when Desi Relaford watched a called third strike. The Yankees lead came gradually as they scored a single run in six innings by six different hitters. Darrell May dropped to 5-6 on the season, giving up five of those runs off 12 hits. The Royals’ loss, combined with the White Sox win over the Angels, dropped Kansas City’s lead to a half-game in the American League Central.
