Tom Watson has flirted with victories all year long with some tantalizing second-place finishes. But it should come as no surprise that the Kansas City native was able to put it all together to win the British Senior Open yesterday. Watson, who won the British five times before joining the Senior Tour, beat Carl Mason on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff. Watson finished in second place four times this season, including a runner-up finish at the Senior U.S. Open. It was Watson’s first sudden death win as a Senior and was his fifth senior major win. This year’s British Open, which was at Turnberry, Scotland, was where Watson won the 1977 British Open.
