Jeff Fassero made his first start of the season and pitched well enough. Fassero went four innings and gave up a run, but the Cardinal offense came up short in a 3-2 loss to the Padres. After getting into a 3-0 hole, the Cardinals rallied for two in the sixth inning with RBI’s from Scott Rolen and Edgar Renteria. In the eighth inning, St. Louis wasted an opportunity when they loaded the bases with no outs. Eduardo Perez grounded into a double play and Tino Martinez flied out to end the inning. The loss dropped the Cardinals four games behind the Astros in the N.L. Central. Before the game, the team learned that starting pitcher Matt Morris will be out 3-6 weeks with a broken hand. He was hit with a line drive on Monday night and left the game in the first inning.
