A soldier from Independence has been killed in Iraq when a bomb went off under his humvee. Specialist Joel Bertoldie was 20. He’s the 148th American soldier killed in the Iraqi conflict. His death pushes the total beyond the number from the 1991 Gulf War. One of his relatives has told the Kansas City Star he joined the army to get money for college. He wanted to become a marine biologist.
