The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is expected to stay closed today while repairs are made to an electrical transformer that burned up yesterday. It’s one of three transformers that provide power to the Arch, its elevator to the top, and to the underground visitors center. About 2,200 people had to be evacuated at mid-day yesterday when the transformer caught fire. More than 40 people were left stranded on the observation deck at the top of the Arch until some auxiliary power was turned on to get them down. Nobody was hurt.
