A fire that burned electrical transformers near the Gateway Arch in St. Louis was responsible evacuations of the area. Several explosions sounded in an underground area about 100 yards from the Arch’s north support. Nobody was hurt in the fire, but it sent thick black smokebillowing into the air. Three transformers caught fire before crews could get the flames under control. Visitors and workers at the Arch, the underground museum and the gift shop were evacuated. The Arch is still closed while firefighters remain on the scene to evaluate the situation.
