The Public Service Commission is considering a change to the cold weather rule. The rule keeps utilities from cutting off non-paying customers when the temperature falls below a certain level. The change would require utilities to provide more inforamtion about who and how many people are being cut off. Ivan Eames is with an advocacy group for the poor, the Community Action Agency in Columbia. He says if the rule is put in, more information will become public, and that’s important. Lawyers for the utility companies argued they might have trouble providing the information, but Eames believes they’re worried about being singled out if they cut off more customers than other utility companies.
