Jason Schmidt has been on a tear. Last night he tossed his third straight complete game as the Giants silenced the Cardinals 5-1 at Busch Stadium. He allowed seven hits, one walk and stuck out five. The Cardinals only run came off Jim Edmonds bat. He hit his 25th home run of the year in the ninth inning. Schmidt over-shadowed Danny Haren who made his major league debut. Haren was the victim of two runs off a Jim Edmonds error in the fourth inning. Edmonds missed a line drive in center field allowing the Giants to extend their lead to 4-0. Haren allowed seven hits, one walk and two earned runs to get the loss. Esteban Yan pitched the final three innings and gave up a run. The Cardinals still have a one game lead in the National League Central over the Cubs and Astros. Back-up catcher Joe Girardi was put back on the disabled list with back problems and Chris Widger has been recalled from Class AAA Memphis.
