Carmen Deck is back under a death sentence. Deck’s original death penalty for killing a couple at their home near DeSoto had been tossed out by the State Supreme Court because of poor jury instructions. A new jury re-heard the penalty phase of his trial in April and recommended the death sentence be reimposed. A judge in Jefferson County has refused a request from Deck’s lawyer that the sentence be cut to life without parole and has followed the jury’s recommendation. Deck’s sister is doing a 70-year prison sentence for her part in the killings.
