The head of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops says studies and audits are one thing, but only a Bishop can assure parishioners that their children are protected from abusive priests. The Bishops are holding their annual convention in St. Louis. Bishop Wilton Gregory says a survey of every diocese in this country is asking each of them to check records for the last 52 years and report on abuse incidents, the number of abusers, and the amount of money spent for care of the victims, lawyers’ fees, and settlements.
