Cards Lose Late Lead In Calero’s First Start

June 17, 2003 By admin Leave a Comment

Kiko Calero was stunning in his first major league start. He went five innings allowing one run off three hits and struck out nine. That’s where the good news ended for the Cardinals pitching staff. They blew a 4-1 lead thanks to a bullpen melt down. Cal Eldred gave up four runs and Steve Kline allowed three in a 9-4 loss to the Brewers. The final run of the game came as result of a bases-loaded walk, offered up by Kline. The loss ruined a great day for Mike Matheny who produced the first four-hit game of his career. He and J.D. Drew homered in the loss. The Cards, who are in third place in the National League Central, trail the first-place Cubs by three games.
