Tom Watson of Kansas City shot a five under 65 to take a share of the lead at the US Open. He’s tied with Brett Quigley who also fired a 65. Watson started the round with a bogey, but shot 12 pars, four birdies and an eagle the rest of the way. Watson putted just 23 times on Thursday. He gives his caddy Bruce Edwards credit for that. Edwards suggested to Watson that he switch back to an old putter before they left for Olympia Fields. Watson, who’s 53, won the US open in 1982. His last major championship was the 1983 British Open. Jay Williamson of St. Louis is 2-over. Hale Irwin of St. Louis pulled out after 12 holes with a back injury. Irwin won the U.S. Open in 1990.
