What seemed improbable for those outside of Southwest Missouri, never seemed out of reach for those involved. The Southwest Missouri State advanced to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska for the first time in school history with a 13-7 win over Ohio State at the Super Regionals in Columbus, Ohio. Trailing 6-3 in the sixth inning, the Bears whipped up an eight-run rally with two outs. Catcher Tony Piazza capped the rally with a grand slam, driving in five runs on the day. Dant’e Brinkley and Clay Wheeler drove in two apiece. Pitcher Brad Ziegler got the victory despite allowing seven runs off nine hits and four walks. Bob Zimmerman closed it out, pitching the final two and a third innings. SMS’ first game in the CWS will be against either Houston or Rice on Saturday. The Bears are 40-24 on the season.
