Shaun Marcum was the first of five SMS Bears to be selected as the Major League Baseball draft got underway yesterday. Marcum who hit .282 and led the team with 13 saves, was taken in the third round by the Blue Jays. Junior pitchers Chad Mullholland was also taken by Toronto. Fellow junior pitcher Bob Zimmerman went to the Angles, senior catcher Tony Piazza was taken by the Mets and senior pitcher Brad Ziegler went to the Phillies. Three Missouri Tigers were selected in the draft. Sophomore pitcher Justin James and senior outfielder Jayce Tingler were picked up by the Blue Jays, while the Rangers took junior shortstop Ian Kinsler. The Red Sox grabbed Southeast Missouri State shortstop Zach Borowiak. The Devil Rays took Springfield Hillcrest senior John Barratt, who had a 0.00 ERA and was named the Missouri high school player of the year
