A quick start and even quicker exit from the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament had Keith Guttin and his SMS Bears wondering whether or not they had plans that involved baseball this week. After winning games on Thursday and Friday, SMS lost two on Saturday and the regular season conference champs were knocked out. With a record of 35-20 the Bears were relying on an at large bid to make the 64-team field of the NCAA Tournament. Apparently their regular-season MVC title and success against Top 50 teams were impressive enough to earn SMS the third-seed in the Lincoln, Nebraska regional. On Friday, the Bears will go up against 2nd seeded Coastal Carolina, which went 45-16 and won the Big South Conference tournament. Wichita St., which won the conference tournament, was the only other MVC team to be selected. This is SMS’s sixth trip to the NCAA’s in the last nine years and their seventh trip overall.
