State lawmakers are considering a transportation accountability measure that would include restrictions on political activities for current highway commissioners. While former Highway Commission Chair S. Lee Kling was mentioned by name for his fundraising for the Democrat Party, Committee Chair Senator Jon Dolan of Lake St. Louis says there’s blame for both Republicans and Democrats. Dolan hopes restricting some of the political activities of highway commissioners will dispel some of the public’s views that the Highway Commission does not operate fairly. But he promises the measure won’t go so far to infringe on the commissioners’ constitutional rights to be involved in the political process.
