State Auditor Claire McCaskill is still holding her cards close to the vest, stopping short of saying she’s planning a run for the Governor’s Office next year. Speculation about McCaskill’s political ambitions is among the hottest topics at the State Capitol. She’s been raising money for a continuing committee that might or might not end up being used for a McCaskill for Governor Campaign. McCaskill insists it’s too early to say whether she’ll challenge Governor Holden for the Democratic Party’s nomination for Governor next year. McCaskill recently released an audit of the Governor’s Office, showing hundreds of thousands of dollars used by that office were actually charged to other agencies. Little fanfare was made of that audit, and McCaskill says there’s a good reason for that. She claims she didn’t want to politicize the audit and have it appear as though she were trying to capitalize. Campaign finance reports show McCaskill’s continuing committee has raised about $740,000. That compares to $1.5-Million for Governor Holden. Republican Secretary of State Matt Blunt has $712,000 on hand.
