This week has been designated as work zone awareness in Missouri and transportation officials are trying to get people to pay more attention when driving through the orange-barrelled areas. Transportation officials have handed out orange lapel pins and orange ribbons to tie onto cars as a reminder of the orange barrels in the work zones. Transportation Department Spokesman Melissa Black says in 2001, more than one thousand people were injured and 25 were killed in work zone accidents – mostly due to driver inattention.
