A Central Missouri chamber of commerce is lobbying transportation officials to expand Highway 50 to four lanes between Union and Sedalia. Chris Yarnell with the Jefferson City chamber tells highway commissioners if the transportation department wants to done the massive amount of road work officials claim needs to be done, there will need to be a viable, close alternative of the artery between St. Louis and Kansas City. He says not only are there vital economic reasons, but even national defense issues at stake. But transportation officials admit any expansion of that stretch of Highway 50 might mean bypassing some of the smaller communities along the way. They say they’re working with those communities to find a plan best for all.
