Missouri’s top Congressman on defense matters wants to see a bigger and more diverse military. Congressman Ike Skelton thinks we need more people in military uniform -fulltime. He thinks the reserves are on the verge of being over-worked. He won’t line up behind a proposal to reinstate the draft, but he does favor a program that will draw more people into 18-month enlistments with two years of reserve duty. He says more people need to have an ownership of their country, and public service is one way to earn it. And that includes military service. But he says some segments of society are not as involved in the mlitary as they should be. Skelton says the nation would profit by urging more people from across the economic spectrum to be involved in public service, including military service. He says a draft is worth looking at, but he doesn’t think it is something Congress will pass.
