Snyder Weighs In On Stipend Debate

February 25, 2003 By admin Leave a Comment

Nebraska State Senator Ernie Chambers has proposed a bill that would pay football players a monthly stipend. The idea of players getting paid legally has sparked a national debate on several fronts. The first question is whether or not it’s right. Others will argue that if you pay players in one sport, then you must pay all athletes. The Nebraska Legislature is currently debating the bill and even if it passes, there is a stipulation that requires three of the other six states with Big 12 schools (Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado and Iowa) would also have to pass similar legislation. Missouri Tiger head coach Quin Snyder said on Monday, “Philosophically it’s something you’d obviously want to do,” but added, “In theory (the athlete’s) compensation is the educational opportunity.”
