State legislators have been presented with the first phase of a comprehensive study to define what constitutes an “adequate” education and what it would cost per child for the state’s elementary and secondary school children to have such an education. John Augenblick is the principal author of the School Finance Adequacy Study for Missouri. He says more money is needed for education to bring the level to a total of $5,428 per pupil per year. Augenblick says this figure is based on students without special needs. He says the number rises when special needs students are taken into account.
