Budget Cuts Could Affect SMS Sports

February 18, 2003 By admin Leave a Comment

Football, basketball and baseball will be safe, but what about other sports at SMS? The university announced that they may have to cut some sports next school year if the state’s financial woes continue. President John Keiser told the Springfield News-Leader that if the budget is cut by another 10-15 percent, the school may have to eliminate some sports. Athletic Director Bill Rowe said if SMS drops any of the programs, that the decision will be in adherence to Title IX guidelines. The decision could be made before the end of the spring semester. They’ll base the decision on a number of factors including the revenue the program brings in and it’s general popularity.
