The place where a major Civil War battle was fought on the 40th anniversary of Missouri statehood is considered one of the most endangered Civil War battlefields in the country. The Civil War Preservation Trust lists Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield, south of Springfield, as one of the 15 battlefields most at risk from urban sprawl. The Trust says additonal land on two sides of the battlefield should be purchased to preserve the battlefield and the rural area that surrounds it.
