State officials might give a little on the Confederate flag issues. Descendants of Confederate solidiers have mounted an emotional campaign against the state’s decsion to remove Confederate flags at the two Confederate cemetaries in the state. State Department of Natural Resources Director Steve Mahfood ordered the flags down after getting a phone call from a spokesman for Governor Bob Holden. The spokesman made the call after St. Louis Democratic Congressman Richard Gephardt stated the Confederate flag should never be allowed to fly in the United States during a presidential campaign stop. Holden once worked for Gephardt. The parks chief for the DNR has told the Associated Press he would see no difficulty in flying the flag in conjunction with special events, but otherwise could not see it flying on a regular basis.
