Gay rights has become an issue at William Jewell College in Liberty, pitting homosexual activists against the college’s Baptist heritage. The Student Senate votes tonight on a proposal to include sexual orientation in the college anti-discrimination clause. If three-quarters of the Senate approve it, the issue would go to a vote of the entire student body. The vote would carry no legal weight. Members of the Missouri Baptist Convention have expressed displeasure that the administration hasn’t come out against the proposal. They say it conflicts with the biblical teaching upon which the college is founded.
