Governor Bob Holden has met with House Republican leaders to discuss budget issues, but it’s uncertain how much that meeting has helped close the gap between widely different views on the state budget problem. House Speaker Catherine Hanaway of Warson Woods remains unconvinced about closing what Holden terms as business tax loopholes to raise an extra $186-Million. She worries it could prove counter-productive. As for Holden, he says such statements only prove that Republicans aren’t focusing on the problem at hand. Holden says it’s up to Republicans to outline an alternative to cover a projected one billion dollar budget deficit, if they don’t like his.
