A lesson for members of the House Appropriations-Education Committee examining the education budget. Gerri Ogle of the Department of Education taught lawmakers about state education dollars being tied – at least in part – to property evaluations and property taxes at the local level. But, she pointed out to them that increasing taxes won’t always bring about more state dollars for education – especially during tough budget times. During these bad times, state dollars earmarked for a certain school district might be diverted elsewhere if the district expecting the money is getting added revenues from local tax initiatives.
