Legislators in the House and Senate are moving forward with plans to pass bills aimed at reforming the civil justice system. Senator Delbert Scott of Lowry City sponsors the Senate version of the bill. He says at a time when the state is trying to attract new jobs and hold onto the jobs it has, sue-happy situations are not good for the state’s economy. Senator Ken Jacob of Columbia responds to problems with medical care, saying malpractice insurance premiums are rising because the insurance companies are trying to recover from some bad investments. Backers of the legislation say they’ll hold hearings next week and are intent on getting some kind of a tort reform law passed during this session. Previous attempts have failed.
