Governor Bob Holden is painting a dark financial picture for state government as he tours the state touting his plan to get rid of some business perks in the state tax code. Holden has told a crowd in Independence the public needs to pressure state lawmakers to closely examine the code and get rid of tax breaks that have not helped the economy grow. Holden says the next fiscal year’s budget could be a half-billion dollars less than this year’s budget because of lagging tax collections. He and the State Budget Director say more cuts are likely in the last half of this fiscal year because of the slow economy.
