The Royals named first baseman Mike Sweeney their player of the year yesterday. Sweeney hit .340, winning the award for the second time in his career. He’s the sixth two-time winner. Sweeney was twice named the American League’s Player of the Week in 2002. But don’t blame him if this isn’t the most exciting thing to happen to him this week. Sweeney is getting married on Saturday to Shara Nettles. Her father is former Royal Jim Nettles. Her uncle is fellow ex-big leaguer Graig Nettles.
