While election officials in most of the state are anticipating a carefree Election Day, officials in St. Louis are keeping their fingers crossed that there’s no repeat of the voting irregularities the city experienced in November of 2000. Ray Gruender, the federal prosecutor in St. Louis, says his office can’t deal with every issue that might arise, but he will have people on hand to enforce federal laws. The St. Louis debacle of two years ago was mentioned along with the Florida fiasco as the main reasons for the election reform legislation that was passed by Congress and signed by the President.
