Northwest Missouri St. had no trouble topping Pittsburg St. 29-7 at Arrowhead Stadium in “The Clash of the Champions”. The game attracted 26,695 fans, breaking the unofficial record of 20,575 for a Division II football game. The Bearcats scored on their first drive, an 80-yard march and never looked back. They lead 19-0 going into the half. The Gorillas didn’t score until late in the fourth quarter with an interception returned for a touchdown. Northwest held Pittsburg St. to just 139 yards in total offense. Meanwhile, NWMSU compiled 467 yards. Running back Mitch Herring had 109 yards rushing and two touchdowns and quarterback John McMenamin passed for 313 yards and a touchdown. The loss was huge for #11 PSU, which was ranked third in the Division II poll less than a week ago. The Gorillas are now 5-2 and their chances of making the playoffs are now in jeopardy. Pittsburg St. has now lost two straight conference games for the first time since joining the MIAA. The 5th ranked Bearcats are 7-0.
