If fans didn’t realize how bad J.D. Drew’s knee was, doctors know. The Cardinals right fielder underwent surgery to have dead tendons removed from his right knee. Doctors were surprised by how much there was to take out. He underwent a procedure similar to what Mark McGwire went through after the 2000 season. It’s uncertain when he’ll be back to full speed, but he’s not expected to be ready to go until after the 2003 season begins. Drew’s numbers were dramatically down in 2002, hitting .252 this past season.
