One of the issues you’ll be voting on next month involves added authority for the City of St. Louis – and you’ll be voting on that issue whether you live in St. Louis, Kansas City, Joplin, or any other city or town in the state. Amendment 1 would change the Missouri Constitution to allow the City of St. Louis – the only city in the state outside a county – the powers of a county. As things stand now, those powers are held by the State Legislature. Jason Hannasch, Executive Director of “Yes For Amendment One, Home Rule For St. Louis,” says granting these powers to St. Louis would free the Legislature from the need to deal with business that is of no concern to residents of the rest of the state. The pro-Amendment 1 forces insist the change would not cost citizens of the state a cent and, in fact, would take some of the burden off state lawmakers.
