Attack on Gamboa Mars Royals Win

September 20, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

For over eight innings it was an uneventful ball game. The Royals had a 2-1 lead over the White Sox in the top of the ninth, when a bizarre event changed the complexion of the entire evening in Chicago. The two men, a father and son charged out on to the field and attacked Royals first base coach Tom Gamboa. The Royals bench immediately cleared and jumped on the two. A knife was found but wasn’t used in the attack. Luckily, Gamboa suffered only a cut above the right I .The father will be charged with felony assault, his son will be charged as a juvenile. Once order was finally restored, the Royals went on to beat the White Sox 2-1. Carlos Beltran drove in both runs with a two-run homer. Paul Byrd got his 17th win of the season. Roberto Hernandez earned his 26th save.
