Senator Kit Bond is trying to convince his colleagues in the U.S. Senate to go along with an aspect of the Interior Department appropriations bill that would allow for the clearing out of downed trees and branches from the Mark Twain National Forest and other forests. Bond says the dead trees are fuel for wildfires and action to prevent the fires must be taken now. Bond and others say some environmentalists are standing in the way of the clear-out over fear of increased logging.
