A lawsuit charging a Catholic priest sexually abused a boy years ago while he was teaching at a Hannbal seminary has been dismissed by a circuit judge in St. Louis County. The judge says it’s far too late to sue Anthony J. O’Conell, who later became the Bishop of the Palm Beach, Florida, diocese. The lawsuit also charged church officials in Kansas City, Jefferson City, and Knoxville, Tennessee, covered up the abuse. The lawyers in the case say they’ll appeal the ruling. Two other suits alleging abuse by O’Connell are pending in Hannibal. The lawsuits say O’Connell abused boys when he was on the faculty at St. Thomas Seminary in Hannibal in the late 1960s.
