A battle between the state and Premium Standard Farms would remain a battle only between those two under a legal action filed by the Attorney General. Attorney General Jay Nixon has filed legal papers objecting to the Sierra Club’s attempts to intervene in his action against Premium StandardFarms, the huge hog operation in northern Missouri accused of excessive hog waste spills. Nixon says his office is attempting to force compliance with Missouri law, not argue whether operations such as PSF should exist. Nixon accuses the Sierra Club of trying to use the lawsuit as a means of publicity, something Ken Midkiff with the Sierra Club denies. Midkiff says the Sierra Club wants to block any out-of-court settlement between the state and PSF and wants PSF to face the maximum fine allowed by law.
