Mike Sweeney’s three- run homer was wasted as the Royals fell to the Mariners 9-4 in Seattle. Sweeney’s blast gave the Royals a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the M’s rallied for three of their own to tie it. Seattle scored seven runs off starter Jeff Suppan, who lost his eighth game in a row, dropping to 8-15. Sweeney was 1-4 on Sunday, dropping his batting average to .341. He’s second in the A.L. batting race. Bernie Williams is first with a .342 average.
