August 23, 2002 By admin Leave a Comment

Fernando Vina’s two-run double in the bottom of the ninth capped a three-run rally and lifted the Cardinals over the Pirates 5-4. Vina got the hit off Pittsburgh reliever Mike Williams who has 35 saves so far this season. Tino Martinez, Edgar Renteria and Miguel Cairo all reached in the ninth as well. Renteria’s RBI made it 4-3 Pirates. Gabe Molina got his first win of the season and the second of his career, pitching to the Pirates in the ninth inning. The Cardinals have won 11 of 14 and still hold a five-game lead over the Astros in the National League Central.
