An environmental group wants to get involved in a lawsuit the state is bringing against a major Missouri hog producer, but the Attorney General does not want the help. In June, Attorney General Jay Nixon filed suit against Premium Standard Farms for hog waste spills in northern Missouri. Nixon and the corporate farms had reached agreement three years ago to settle claims about how it handles hog waste. Ken Midkiff with the Sierra Club says, based on how the state has handled Premium Standard in the past, he’s worried the state won’t follow through. A spokesman for Nixon, Scott Holste, takes exception with suggestions that the state has not done enough in the past. Holste says other parties becoming involved in the state’s lawsuit could cloud the issue. Midkiff says he’s surprised the Attorney General doesn’t want the help.
